A mother visiting a zoo in eastern England has described the terrifying moments she heard a “loud scream” after a three-year-old boy was allegedly thrown into a crocodile enclosure by a stranger.
The incident happened on June 18 at Johnsons of Old Hurst Zoo in Cambridgeshire and has shocked communities across the United Kingdom. Police have arrested a 30-year-old man from Norfolk on suspicion of attempted murder after the young child ended up inside the reptile enclosure. Authorities say the suspect is not believed to be known to the boy. The child remains in critical but stable condition in hospital.
One mother who was visiting the zoo with her young daughter recalled hearing what she described as a “heart-stopping” scream from the direction of the reptile area. She initially thought emergency sirens were responding to an accident outside the zoo, but soon realized something serious had happened inside the attraction. Witnesses said the atmosphere quickly became quiet as emergency crews arrived and visitors were moved away from the scene.
According to investigators, the boy suffered severe injuries after entering the enclosure. Reports indicate he sustained major injuries from the fall into the habitat and was later transported to Addenbrooke’s Hospital for emergency treatment. Police have confirmed that he remains in a critical but stable condition.
Authorities are investigating reports that the child was intentionally thrown into the enclosure. While some media outlets have reported that at least one crocodile may have been involved in the incident, police continue to investigate the exact sequence of events. Officials have urged the public to avoid speculation while inquiries remain ongoing.
The case has also drawn attention because of the actions of zoo staff during the emergency. Multiple reports state that Tracey Johnson, the wife of the zoo owner, entered the enclosure to help rescue the child before emergency responders arrived. Her actions have been widely praised as courageous and potentially life-saving.
Following the incident, police arrested a man on suspicion of attempted murder. Investigators later said the suspect was considered unfit for interview and has been released on bail while inquiries continue. Specialist officers are supporting the child’s family throughout the investigation.
The zoo temporarily closed its Tropical House area after the incident out of respect for the family, although other sections of the attraction remain open. Zoo officials said their thoughts are with the child and his loved ones as he continues to receive medical care.
The shocking event has sparked widespread discussion across social media and news outlets, with many expressing disbelief that such an incident could occur during a family visit to a zoo. As investigators work to establish exactly what happened, the focus remains on the recovery of the young boy and the ongoing police inquiry.
For now, many questions remain unanswered. What is known is that a routine family outing turned into a tragedy within moments, leaving witnesses shaken and a community hoping for the toddler’s recovery.
